DIY Moves and the Credit Crunch

Posted on 11/07/08, filed under Storage and Moving advice | No Comments

Not a day goes by without another article in the media saying how the credit crunch is affecting families and the cost of living.  Thoughts will  turn to cutting costs and saving money.  If a family is moving home, no doubt, the idea of doing the removal themselves will crop up.

A good deal of our clients are casualties from DIY moves.  A bit of a boys day out springs to mind, blokes all doing some physical work and driving a big truck.  The reality is often a different story.

When you hire a van for removals it is often smaller than the average removal van and does not come equipped with ties and blankets- essential for securing and protecting your furniture in transit.  The offer of help from friends and family often dwindles to nothing on the day and there you are left to move house by yourself.  There is a very definite skill to packing a van and an inexperienced person may only manage to fit half the volume on as opposed to an experienced removal company.  This results in having to do several trips, extending the van hire for another day and frayed tempers all round.  Moving home in London is never easy when it comes to traffic and parking and it is only when you’re in it that you think “Why didn’t I just pay someone else to move me?”

Age is another sad factor of life and a great deal of stamina is required for a removal day. Carrying heavy furniture and removal boxes up and down stairs is not easy.  Count the cost of a possible back injury and time off work – is it worth it?

They say moving house, divorce and death are three of the most stressful things – we concur.  We have in fact had 2 divorces occur on a moving day!  Take the stress out of your move, get a professional moving company to do the job and sit back and enjoy the moving experience with Amber Moves.

Storage costs in London

Posted on 08/07/08, filed under Storage and Moving advice | No Comments

A recent article in the Times investigated the costs of self storage.  At Amber Moves we have been providing containerised storage for several years and have learnt a lot along the way.

People store their goods for many reasons:

- a landlord who has tenants who want to rent his flat unfurnished

- house sale and purchase not gone to plan so interim storage for a few months so as not to lose the sale

- extensive renovations underway so contents of current house need to be put into storage

- going abroad for work reasons for an extended period; or

- simply not enough space at home

The key points to consider when putting your things into store are what is the total value of my goods weighed up against the cost of storage for a year.  Very often it would be cheaper to dispose of the furniture and replace it than to actually store it.  If you are considering long term storage, our advice is always to only store those items that are irreplaceable or have sentimental value.  Always budget for being in store longer than expected as this is often the case, especially when it comes to builders.

Consider the type of storage you require and your needs – self-storage is ideal if you want to add and take away to your storage.  We are always happy to provide a removal service to your local storage.  If you do not need access to your storage, containerised storage is the gold standard.  It is secure, temperature controlled, not accessible to the public, stored in fire-proof containers and the loading takes place on ground level – no stairs, trolleys or lifts to add to the removal cost.

Always consider the benefits of using a professional removal firm – the men will have the experience needed to pack the unit maximising all the space while ensuring nothing is squashed or liable to damage.

The price difference between self storage and containerised storage is very comparable.  Our storage is charged on a week to week basis with no penalites if you remove your goods earlier than agreed.  We will always offer a reduced rate for long term storage.  Our insurance covers your goods up to £25k at no additional cost.

Remember cheap isn’t always best – storing your goods in a cheap warehouse or friends garage may only lead to you discovering damp has ruined all your worldly possessions.  In summary put a value on your goods and the storage charges should be relative to that figure.
